Dr. Albert C. Johnston (1900–1988) was Keene’s first radiologist and a respected physician who lived and practiced in the community from 1940 to 1966. During a time of widespread racial discrimination, Dr. Johnston and his family navigated complex questions of identity and belonging as people of mixed African, South Asian Indian, and European ancestry.
After the U.S. Navy revoked his World War II medical commission upon learning of his racial background, the Johnston family publicly embraced their identity. Their story later inspired the book Lost Boundaries and the film adaptation of the same name.
We honor Dr. Johnston for his contributions to Keene, his resilience in the face of discrimination, and the important conversations his story continues to inspire about identity, belonging, and civil rights.
